Abdullah Passed Najib an Economy in Total Mess!

Phillips Straub, Reckoning Day

"Malaysians have had to pay for his poor stewardship through higher prices, stagnating wages and growing private sector debt."

– Wall Street Journal Asia, September 18th, 2008

Yesterday, Dato Seri Abdullah switched the Finance portfolio for Defense with Dato Seri Najib in what many believed as his move to pass the buck to Najib. With the acqusition of his old Defense portfolio and remark on Anwar as an economic and security threat, it is viewed by the market as Abdullah attempting to flex the millitary muscle to maintain himself in office.

Arising from the financial crisis abroad from failure of few Financial Institution, Bursa Malaysia fell to touch a 2-year low 965.46 at noon dropping 37.53 points or 3.74%. More fall is expected, with KL drop is relatively low compared to Hang Seng 7.38% and Kospi 3.85%.

After in co-hort with the local spin meistro to creat a misrepresentation of the state of economy, WSJ disengage itself and released a bomb. In today’s report, WSJ presented a bleak situation on the state of economy of Malaysia.

However, the report is skewed to promote the Pakatan Rakyat. Have the Neo-Con abandon Abdullah or was he merely used? One thoery still being bandied unabated is Abdullah is under ransom?

Najib will be up to defend Abdullah’s economic mess for the October 16 parliamentary budget debate. Anwar demanded from Abdullah today a special Parliamentary session no later than September 23rd, 2008 for a no-confidance vote.

The Wall Street Journal Asia report is produced below:

Pak Lah's Economic Reckoning

18 Sept, 2008
WALL STREET JOURNAL ASIA

Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced this week that he has enough parliamentary support to unseat the current government, led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. If he does, Abdullah's lacklustre economic management will be largely to blame.

The prime minister has not introduced any substantive reforms during his nearly five years in office, preferring to rely instead on opening up the government purse. Under the Ninth Malaysia Plan announced in 2005, he expanded public-sector spending to RM200 billion annually from RM160 billion. In his Midterm Plan Review this year, he increased this outlay to RM240 billion. The national debt now stands at RM285 billion, up from RM192 billion in 2004. The official fiscal deficit has risen to 4.8% of GDP this year, from 3.2% last year. Revenue is being spent faster than it is coming in.

It's hard to argue that these outlays have served the broad public interest. Much of the funding has been channelled to elites in the majority Malay community, under the country's pro-Malay affirmation action programme. That has created discontent with many Malay who don't see the full benefits of the programme, and among the minority Chinese and Indians, who are excluded from it altogether.

Abdullah's stewardship has had a real impact on the economy. Capital flight has risen sharply; Malaysian investment abroad now exceeds inward foreign investment. The Kuala Lumpur stock exchange has lost almost one-fifth of its value this year to date. Malaysia's currency, the ringgit, saw its biggest one-month loss last month since the end of the dollar peg in 2005. Although GDP growth has averaged a robust 5% annual growth under Abdullah, that record is now under threat. Inflation reached a record 8.5% this summer. Job creation has reached record lows, as unemployment, particularly among young majority Malays, remains high. Ironically, only the opposition-led state governments are attracting new foreign investment — and without the federal government's help, no less.

Abdullah's 2004 attempts to promote growth and investment — such as through the promotion of the biotechnology and agricultural industries — have failed. He also fumbled discussions with the United States on a free trade agreement, which have now stalled. What Malaysia really needs is education reform and the liberalisation of its labour markets to improve its economic competitiveness.

The political opposition, in the form of Anwar and his Pakatan Rakyat coalition, have seized on these issues. They have promised to root out corruption and to implement a new economic policy to address the concerns of all ethnic communities in Malaysia. Their platform aims to move beyond populist spending to introduce structural reforms in government procurement programmes and in the management of government-linked companies.

When Abdullah assumed office in 2004, he inherited an economy in need of structural reform. Malaysians have had to pay for his poor stewardship through higher prices, stagnating wages and growing private sector debt. Soon, Abdullah may have to pay the political price for that record.

Ku Li called "transition plan" a joke

"Today the "transition plan" has degenerated into a joke. In the middle of a grave political crisis our leaders are engaged in a flip-flop dance over the precise meaning of this mysterious term. It is time we spoke plainly and stopped hiding behind fictitious language which everyone can see through. The abuse of language is too often a mask for the abuse of power." - Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah

The full press stament in full below:

Tuesday 16 September 2008

Statement to the Press on the latest announcement on the Transition Plan

I have always maintained that the "power transition plan" is undemocratic and contrary to Umno's Constitution. Party leadership is a democratic trust, not personal property to be handed on from one individual to another in the manner they please. There is no such thing as a "transition plan" in the party constitution because Umno is a democratic party, and democratic parties renew their leadership through elections, not by backroom appointments.

Today the "transition plan" has degenerated into a joke. In the middle of a grave political crisis our leaders are engaged in a flip-flop dance over the precise meaning of this mysterious term. It is time we spoke plainly and stopped hiding behind fictitious language which everyone can see through. The abuse of language is too often a mask for the abuse of power.

Either resign or stay on and govern. Either contest leadership positions through open elections or don't, and do please have the honour to come out and say so, either way. Those unable to face Umno's membership and the rakyat with plain words about their intentions might seem to be the wrong persons to provide the open, principled leadership that our country needs, and now needs desperately. Those who don't understand or respect things such as democratic process and constitutionality might seem to be the wrong persons to uphold the rule of law and respect for the Federal Constitution that are the first criterion of leadership.

Khairy's So-Called Setiakawan, Abdullah's Conniving, and Najib's Rumoured Oath

News Straits Times is heard to spin tomorrow's news to say Najib will reject all nominations from Divisions

He may have a wicked sense of humour, but never assume all said is a joke and fiction. Those familiar noticed that blogger Husin Lempoyang interspersed his satire with serious pieces of information as he take a swipe at politicans he decide to "put up for sale".

Today, Abdullah's portfolio switch plan was taken to scrutiny. He summed up his suspicion of Abdullah with this warning and an interesting revelation of history. "PM terakhir pegang Kewangan pencen. TPM terakhir pegang Kewangan masuk penjara."

Husin inserted serious information into his satire but some mainstream media are presenting serious reporting as "satire". These three situations are interesting "satire" by mainstream media.

Khairy's So-Called Setiakawan

By hook or crook, Abdullah want to stay on, at least to provide Khairy a safe journey to win the Ketua Pemuda post and obtain Ministerial post. As a true familyman and I am not sure if the logic is morally right, family's interest supercede everything for Abdullah. Never mind that Khairy is a proven time and time again to be a liability for UMNO.

Khairy's cliquish and arrogant "setiakawan" mannerism was behind the shaky state of the current Negeri Sembilan state government, his by-election campaign pissed voters than gaining votes for BN, and his show off made the constituent "menyampah" than respect for their MPs.

It is the talk of Rembau that in a recent buka puasa event, he arrived by helicopter and was waited by a team of bikers.

Khairy's so-called "setiakawan" that undeniably replaced top division officials in some 80 odd "kawasan" with his planted people, usually from Pemuda. This caused resentment from grassroots and became a significant factor attributing to BN's poor showing in GE 2008.

Act of sabotage on candidates is heard throughout the country and its suspects have some linkage with Khairy. The case in Jerlun saw 60 campaign workers hospitalised due to laced soya bean packet drinks. One car spotted was a Kuala Lumpur car belonging to the owner of the favouriote joint of Khairy's "kaki".

In 2006, in the midst of his ECM Libra Avenue financial scandal, his "setiakawan" remarks in Penang infuriated Gerakan and MCA. Where Ahmad Ismail received three years suspension, Khairy got away scot free. He did not attend the BN Youth meeting and refused to apologise.

Khairy announced his candidacy for Ketua Pemuda today and "Setiakawan" is his campaign slogan.

Abdullah's Conniving

This must run deep in the family.

In handling the recent political assault from within and without the party, Abdullah's confidante, Riong Kali and gang, is in their elements spinning news of Najib's agreement to the power transition arrangement.

Bigdogdotcom recently spotted Riong Kali, namely Kalimullah with his pants on fire trying to put into Najib's mouth agreement to leadership transition plan.

Dato Seri Dr Rais Yatim was spinned to state as though he agreed that Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin should resign for expressing against a power transition claimed as already agreed by Ministers and Supreme Council.

During the announcement of the portfolio switch today, the mainstream papers reported Najib agreed to the power transition. The answer and manner Najib answered the probe from one journalist in the press conference showed on TV3 was inconclusive.

MalaysianDigest.com published this differing take.

Transition Still Up To UMNO Members

When asked about the transition plan of which the switcheroo of Defence and Finance portfolios between himself and Pak Lah is part of, Datuk Seri Najib answered that "I and the PM have come to an agreement, as has been explained by the PM just now, I hope that this plan will be accepted and used by the party and the people, in order to ensure the stability of the Party [UMNO] and the nation".

However when asked whether he intends to run in the upcoming party elections, Datuk Seri Najib stated that "we have agreed, I am leaving it to the party, we are offering ourselves to the party and I hope that they will accept".

While the issue of a portfolio swap may have been resolved today, the issue of the succession seems still to hang in the balance as it is all still left "to the party."

Whatever that might have been greed, if they members so decide to nominate one, or the other for whatever post, a straight up fight in the party elections could still be in the works. The division meetings to be held after this may just hold the key.

Najib's Rumoured Oath

Talk is now circulating that Dato Seri Najib swore or "bersumpah" and was reported he would not challenge PM Abdullah for UMNO's Presidency. [still searching for the news link]. It is believed to happen around the time of the announcement for June 2010 power transition.

This may not be relevant to outsider but to the masterly eyes of grassroot politician, it can be a political blockbuster that attracts attention.

Bersumpah seemed to be the favourite play this time around. Saiful made his mubahalah, Anwar refused to do so, and Najib swore to have never met Altantuya. Statutory Declaration is bersumpah under oath and there are few; Balasundram and Raja Petra.

It sounds like and likely to have the deft touch of Abdullah's people.

Spin or not, this is just a desperate attempt to hold on to power and avoid the inevitable.

Waste not effort and time, abandon this ship!

Video: The Lesson from Titanic, Abandon Before the Inevitable!

"The Titanic is unsinkable!"

That was the claim of Titanic, the new behemoth naval invention, truly an engineering marvel of the time. It will deny mother nature.

Hear me speak! I will lead you to that rightful destiny.

Titanic left the Port of Southampton one afternoon in 1912 with much pride and arrogance, refusing to heed advice and warnings. The owner is so proud that the oppulence and grandeur of his ship is no more enough.

By all means, he wanted the headline to boast to the world that he is right. He does not need critics and sceptics, a young new ship could cross the Atlantic at new record time on it's maiden voyage!

That confidence and exuberance was only good while it last. The denial would only succumb when it will actually happen. become reality After midnight in the early wee moring of Monday, April 15th, 2008, it met the inevitable. Titanic couldn't avoid an iceberg and it was only a little knock.

When the accident happened, pandemonium broke and everyone was fighting for their life to abondon ship.

With all these claims and perception created of this fine ship, the first voyage many of these passengers were glory seeker. And, some just went along refusing to give much thought of the risk with an unproven new one.

They never expected the unsinkable would failed them. The notion of Titanic not reaching it's destined port within the claimed time is just preposterous.

On that Monday morning, 1,500 died and only 705 survived from the 2,200 on-board. Only those early ones had access to lifeboat and survived.

That proves defying nature is a dear lesson.

Will Muhyiddin Martyr as Another Dead Malay Hero?

Malay heroes are usually dead. Some heroes like Hang Tauh and Hang Jebat does not qualify the moral standard to be called one.

After our heroes have outlived their death defying heroic pursuit and the public salutation, they are left to the elements. Some heroes are left uncared for in their old age. Some ended life in a pathetic state. Only to be revered and glorified upon their death.

In the post GE 12 UMNO political struggle to remove the Prime Minister – an incompetent and highly suspected puppet of some invisible parties, there were many lone voices expressing the grassroots grouse and demand him to take responsibility for BN’s extremely poor showing by resigning.

There was the eminent Tun Dr Mahathir, filial son Dato Mukhriz, loyal lieutenant Tan Sri Sanusi Junid, former rival Tengku Tan Sri Razaleigh Hamzah, and many others mostly retired politicians.

But Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is the lone voice of conscience that consistently stood up from amongst the kow towing members of the UMNO Supreme Council to put the party ahead of self interest.

Guided by his moral conscience, his latest move to demand the power transition immediately persuaded Dr Mahathir to rejoin UMNO and provided Najib the moral strength to set aside the power transition agreement.

This will likely be the tipping factor to make that change. But will Muhyiddin ended up as another martyred “dead” hero?

Muhyiddin’s Persistence

The UMNO Vice President unabashedly sound the bell on UMNO to acknowledge their weakness in the poor election showings, weak leadership, prevailing denial syndrome, removal of the quota vote, revival of party democratic practise, and guise worded demand for the resignation of Prime Minister, Dato Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

The PM, without shame, assumes the last request as merely giving him the discretion to determine his own sweet time to quit. When he finally fixed a date, it was a date not feasible for UMNO to undertake the path of revival to effectively prepare for GE13.

To-date, there is no revival plan in place and the PM continue to blunder one after another, plunging further in the public opinion.

Through all these negative happenings, and threats from the Opposition, it is business as usual with the UMNO members.

Past practise to dish out kain pelikat, spending money, and trips is not just grassroots’ habit but was done by the President to win the hearts of party members. In the past, money exchange hands for vote at the National party convention. This time around, the neighbourhood UMNO branch position is now a new found cash cow.

The exit by Dr Mahathir and slavish campaigning by Tengku Razaleigh did not turn a bat eye, only raising temperature at the grassroots but not amongst the party position holders at the centre and division level.

Permatang Pauh Tipping

There is a saying, “Ada bala di sebalik rahmat, Ada rahmat di sebalik bala” (Misfortune to come with good fortune, Good fortune to come with a misfortune).

It is certainly the case for UMNO. The 2004 hands down win turned out to be a later disaster. The expected lost at the Permatang Pauh by-election turned to be the eye opener. It saw the party morale at new low ebb, psychologically crippled.

Dato Ahmad Ismail episode was badly handled. PM’s flip flop position was no more tolerable. The pressure from BN component parties reached to the extend of encroaching into UMNO’s internal affair. PM was seen succumbing to component party pressure and taking fault over an inconclusive matter.

This incited further anger among the disconsolate UMNO members who felt humiliated by the later episode.

Abdullah’s expression of surprise and unhappiness did not attract the usual chorus of support and gang bang against his detractors. Abdullah’s loyalist, Dato Seri Ali Rustam supported loyal Najib’s seek grassroots endorsement.

Zaid’s voice to seek Muhyiddin dismissal is not strengthened by his decision to quit yesterday. Rafidah’s support for Abdullah is not seen as serious but represents her frustration for losing her Ministerial post to Muhyiddin. Support for Muhyiddin came from Mubarak’s Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang which was strangely given airtime by TV3. The Kalimullah and Kamal Khalid hold on the mainstream media is losing hold.

Earlier, the announcement for the return of Dr Mahathir attracted support from few State UMNOs, State Liaison Chairman, etc. No opposition to the proposal except Abdullah’s guised reluctance.

Tengku Razaleigh’s campaign is reinvigorated by Dr Mahathir’s support. Najib’s position is a veiled “Go!” instruction. If the momentum is sufficient, it could snowball into a desperation defection by Abdullah’s supporters for survival. The writing is on the wall for Abdullah.

Martyred?

Where is Ku Li and Najib heading? With Dr Mahathir supporting Ku Li and son Mukhriz allegiance for Najib, what is the options for Muhyiddin? Which team would Muhyiddin join?

Najib-Muhyiddin team is lethal. Dr Mahathir-Ku Li-Muhyiddin team is deadly. The former does not offer a career path beyond that by virtue of age. The latter offers a prospect but it calls pitting against Najib’s powerful machinery. If things do bring about leadership change, Muhyiddin maybe end his political career by staying put at Vice President, which he has expressed preference.

The politics is immaterial to Muhyiddin. But, damn if I do, damn if I don’t. Will that the price for sacrifice in UMNO? It happened in the past, particularly for Muhyiddin.

Muhyiddin can be described as a steady administrator, leader and political player with a sound and outstanding track record.

He outshine as a leader in trouble times. After the serious 1986 split arising from the intense rivalry between team A and Team B, Muhyiddin played the unacknowledged role to bring back UMNO Johor together and consequently UMNO’s revival through UMNO Baru.

As a result of that, UMNO Johor strengthened. When he was requested back to Federal, UMNO Johor under Dato Gani Osman later denounced, rejected and withdrew their support for him. He lost the UMNO Vice President post with much shame and it is a stab in the back from his own state.

As any Johorean, Muhyiddin’s love for UMNO is unquestionable.

During his Menteri Besar tenure, which is technically the de facto Premier for Johor, the state experienced stupendous economic growth. Johor was ranked as the second state, behind the natural winner, Selangor, in its economic performance. When he left for Kuala Lumpur, Johor had RM2 billion in its financial reserve as compared to RM90 million debt when he took over. There many other areas of progress under his premiership. Under his leadership, UMNO and BN won all their seats.

Like many of us, Muhyiddin saw the deterioration of UMNO to the lowest rung under Abdullah’s administration. He took a stand to protect UMNO from further downfall. And, he exhibits a willingness to risk to his own political career.

Muhyiddin will be the contemporary hero of UMNO. If the past is a representation of a future event, will his home state betray him? Will the chips fall as many expect it to be and he end his career? Will he end up like many great Malay heroes – short taste of victory, abandoned unacknowledged and dead?

Musical Interlude: Life of Illusion - Joe Walsh

Sing it, Abdullah!

Sometimes I can't help the feeling that I'm
Living a life of illusion
And oh, why can't we let it be
And see through the hole in this wall of confusion
I just can't help the feeling I'm
Living a life of illusion

Pow! Right between the eyes
Oh, how nature loves her little surprises
Wow! It all seems so logical now
It's just one of her better disguises
And it comes with no warning
Nature loves her little surprises
Continual crisis

Hey, don't you know it's a waste of your day
Caught up in endless solutions
That have no meaning, just another hunch
Based upon jumping conclusions
Caught up in endless solutions
Backed up against a wall of confusion
Living a life of illusion
